The Boston & Maine (BM) made up a special trial engine setup with the goal of using a former GP9 engine with the prime-mover removed, and hooking it up to two GP40 locomotives so that they could use their extra power and get more tractive effort. The idea worked, but the unit ended up to impractical for long term use, and the idea was scrapped. Other railroads would find out that the system needed more than one operating set so that if one unit went down another could be substituted.
